You are staying legally in Denmark if you have either a valid:

  • Passport from a visa-free country

  • Short-term visa (usually no more than 90 days)

  • Temporary Residence Permit (up to 2 or more years)

  • Permanent Residence Permit (time unlimited)

  • Citizen ship (time-unlimited passport holder)

Danish Residence Permits (opholdstilladelser) are either temporary or permanent. When you get a Residence Permit and register at the CPR Register, you receive a Residence Permit Card (opholdskort).

The residence card will be sent to your mailbox at the Danish address with which you are registered.
You must carry this card at all times while in Denmark. The card shows your identity and contains an electronic chip with your Bio-metric Features and proof that you are staying legally in Denmark.

Every foreigner in Denmark applying for Residence Permit must provide so-called Bio-metric Features.

The registration procedure takes around 5 minutes. You will provide:

  • A photo of your face

  • Fingerprints

The Bio-metric Features are electronically stored in a chip on your Residence Permit Card (opholdskort).

If you are a Non-EU resident with intentions to stay in Denmark for more than three months, you are REQUIRED to register for a CPR Number within two weeks of arriving.
This unique number identifies you as an individual, and the registered information must be kept up-to-date at all times. The registered information includes your:

  • full name

  • current address

  • date of birth

  • spouse

  • children

  • GP (general practitioner = ‘house doctor’/’praktiserende læge’) 

CPR is short for Central Person Register.

The CPR Number has ten digits and consists of your date of birth followed by four digits having this format:
DayMonthYear-xxxx
For example, if your birthday is the 11. of February 1988, your CPR Number will look like this:
110288-xxxx

Normally you also register for the national health insurance as part of you CPR registration, and a few weeks after you will receive your Health Insurance Card (Sundhedskort).
